How Can Teacher Leaders Use Curriculum Mapping to Improve Teaching and Learning?

The Exemplar will be most useful for: Becoming a Teacher Leader

Description:
Curriculum mapping requires teamwork and continual planning. As teams refine their maps, they can expose gaps and redundancies in the curriculum and gauge the appropriate timing for teaching content. In this video, a team of curriculum coordinators from Des Moines, Iowa, are shown as they develop and refine their district’s curriculum map. Their next step will be to assist teachers with implementation through discussion and professional development.
Although curriculum coordinators are leading this work in the video, teacher leaders can begin these discussions in their own schools and districts. Through this process, all parties in the district are better able to understand the instructional needs and expectations, as well as state and national learning standards. Districts can also begin to work toward a fully integrated curriculum.
