How Can Teachers Help Students Develop the Tools They Need to Be Responsible for Their Own Learning?

Location of Exemplar:  Newberry, MICHIGAN
Format:  article
The Exemplar will be most useful for: Supporting Teacher Leaders at Your School

Description:
In an Education Week Teacher article, veteran math teacher Cossondra George reflects on a common teaching pitfall: assuming students know how to learn. George points out that it is not enough to only teach content. Students must be taught to think and process information. Specifically, George shares strategies for teaching students how to effectively take notes and study.

George urges teachers to consider how they can help their students “learn to learn.” Teachers can model strategies on a regular basis and provide multiple opportunities for students to practice these real-life skills.
Teacher leaders can facilitate conversations about their own learning and work with their colleagues to ensure that all students have the tools they need to be successful.
