Description:
For the past year, mentioning public education in New Jersey has usually elicited negative reactions. Teachers are often the focus of this criticism. In an effort to reverse this mindset, the 2011 New Jersey County Teachers of the Year (NJCTY) have created a group that focuses on constructive communication for quality education. The purpose of NJCTY is to promote positive and professional communication among educators, communities, students, and government to ensure high-quality education for all students.

As the first step in this process, these teacher leaders have been conducting forums throughout the state. In addition, NJCTY has created a website to promote what’s working in New Jersey’s educational system, share best practices for effective teaching, and stimulate ideas to improve student achievement.

The work of NJCTY is supported by the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning (NJCTL). Through the innovation of NJCTY teacher leaders and the support of organizations such as NJCTL, families and communities have already been positively affected. In August 2011, NJCTY visited with senior support staff members at the United States Department of Education. During their time in Washington, D.C., they were able to voice the concerns and suggestions of teachers, parents, and community members.

In the words of Yvette McBain, 2011 Morris County Teacher of the Year, NJCTY “surrounds our children with a community that sends an uplifting message by our actions–celebrating what works and coming together to meet the challenges of an ever-changing educational landscape.”
