Wesley D. Hickey and Sandra Harris write about teacher leaders who work to improve student learning through professional development. The authors describe how a small, rural school district asked nine of its expert teachers, a group varying in age and experience, to provide a year-long professional development program for their colleagues. This work has created a stronger community within the district and increased teachers’ involvement with professional development and instructional improvements. Teacher leaders can apply the principles of this exemplar by working with their schools and districts to encourage and engage teachers in conversations about instruction and learning. These discussions, in turn, provide countless opportunities for sharing strategies, resources, and ideas — all in an effort to improve student learning.
