Meek encourages teacher leaders to build on there experiences with parents and families to promote positive relationships and interactions. She provides six categories of parental involvement to aid teacher leaders as they facilitate effective communication. In addition, this exemplar outlines guidelines for communicating about homework and standards.

As part of a school's professional development, teacher leaders can work with their colleagues to understand the differences in lifestyles that exist within schools and respond with respect and empathy. Knowledge of and respect for the variety of cultures existing in a district is fundamental to effective communication about student learning and building positive relationships with parents and students.
